Top 5 Best (and Worst) TV Star to Movie Star Transformations

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

PCPGraphic_SquareAccording to a  deadline.com article this week, Steve Carell, star of The Office said in a BBC Radio interview that he intends to exit NBC’s top comedy series at the end of next season when his contract is up.

Presumably, this move would pave the way for Carell to put all his focus on his movie career.

The transformation from TV star to movie star is a common one as well as a risky one.  Throughout history, we’ve seen careers built and careers flounder with this very maneuver.

In fact, just this week, the Radio Happy Hour welcomed back Amy and Nancy Harrington, the “Pop Culture Passionistas” of PopCulturePassionistas.com/ to share their lists of Top 5 Best (and Worst) TV Star to Movie Star Transformations.

The Pop Culture Passionistas come on at the 17:25 mark

Kevin Sorbo: The Heck with ABC — They Put the Kibosh on My Pilot!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The Kevin Sorbo interview begins at
the 40:32 mark

CAPTION: "It's just so frustrating," Kevin (above) tells us of "Bobby" getting bounced.

by Philip Recchia, BlogTalkRadio

Even after four years, Hercules is still miffed at the Mouse House network.

Interviewed on Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour, Kevin Sorbo (left), who played the title role on the syndicated series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, recounts how Disney’s TV operation failed to pick up what he says was an excellent project.

“I did a pilot for ABC called Bobby Cannon, where I was playing sort of an aging star quarterback for the Chicago Bears,” the he-man actor tells host Dr. Blogstein.

“We were the number-one-tested pilot for ABC. But in their infinite wisdom – this was four years ago – they didn’t pick up my series.

“You go figure that out. So the seven shows they picked up that year? All canceled within six months.

“[Coach creator] Barry Kemp was the creator and show runner… And we had Kate Walsh on the show, before she got Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. We had Rock Carroll. We had a great cast,” Kevin continues.

“It was shocking to me that they never picked it up.

“This is the same guy who said no to American Idol and CSISteve McPherson (right), he’s the president of ABC [Entertainment Group].

“My publicist will go nuts on me for saying this in public.

“But ABC hasn’t hired me for a job in four years, so the heck with them.”

Full House reunion

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

candace-cameron-DJ-Tanner

This week’s Radio Happy Hour turned into an impromptu Full House reunion special.

Candace Cameron Bure, who played D.J. Tanner on the beloved ABC sitcom for eight seasons, was on the Radio Happy Hour to discuss her new project, “Make It Or Break It.”   Bure stars as the soon-to-be step-mom to one of the top female gymnasts in the new ABC Family program that debuted on Monday with the second largest audience for a premier in the network’s history.

During the interview, Steven Stevenson, a wildly gay television critic from California called in to give his (interesting) thoughts on Bure’s new show.

“Hi, this is Steven Stevenson. I’m a television critic. I’m impressed,” he said.

“Oh – with the show?” asked Candace.

“Yes, I saw the premiere on ABC Family, and I have to tell you, you look gorgeous as ever,” the listener continued. “I just responded to the flips and the jumps and the gymnastics that the girls do. The show is cut together marvelously. I’m telling you, a lot of times you see those stunts and you say, Oh, that’s a stunt person. Let’s cut back to the actress. But in this, it is just seamless. Unbelievable!”

“Yea, I thought so too. I thought they did a really nice job editing the show. I saw an earlier version of the pilot, and since then they really tightened it up,” said Candace.

“Speaking of tightened up, I thought the boys on the show were terrific. There’s something for everybody on this series,” the listener added.

“Well, I’m glad you liked it,” said a by-then nervous Candace.

That was when the listener landed his final blow.

“I was bursting at my buttons watching the show,” he said.

Suddenly, Candace got wise and realized that the flamboyant critic was actually her former Full House co-star-Dave Coulier!

Coulier (Joey Gladstone), who introduced Candance to her husband of 13 years, former NHL star Valeri Bure, went on to reminisce about times spent on the set of Full House and recount a recent party they attended with singer John Mayer and fellow Full House alum (and now 90210 star) Lori Loughlin.

‘Glee’ Star Naya Rivera: The Curse of the Sitcom Kid

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

naya rivera gleeby Philip Recchia, BlogTalkRadio

While on the et of The Royal Family in 1991, actress Naya Rivera witnessed star Redd Foxx suffer a fatal heart attack at the age of 68.  Eleven years later, she won a recurring role on The Bernie Mac Show – whose star, Bernie Mac, would die tragically of complications from pneumonia in 2008, at age 50.

Also during her Bernie Mac run, in 2004, Naya landed a guest spot on 8 Simple Rules, just months after star John Ritter fell ill on the set – on September 11 – and died later that day of a congenital heart defect.

Less than a year after Naya’s appearance on John’s final TV project, the sitcom tumbled to 94th place in the Nielsen ratings, and was unceremoniously canceled.

Now, with Naya’s latest sitcom, Glee, set to launch May 19 on Fox – immediately following powerhouse hit American Idol – she fears her co-stars will be put off by “The Curse of the Sitcom Kid.”

“Everyone on Glee is gonna be like, ‘Oh, something bad’s gonna happen because Naya’s on,’” she says this week on Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour.

Earlier in the show, Naya, now 22, recounts her experience watching Redd’s demise.Naya Rivera pic

“It was really weird because I was, like, five and a half, and I got rushed upstairs and I didn’t know what was going on. And now, looking back on it, I’m like, that’s freaky,” she tells host Dr. Blogstein.

“I watched a legend die.”

“Everyone thought he was joking. And then they were like, Oh, snap! He’s for real. It was kind of like the universe answering what he’d been putting out forever,” Naya adds, referring to the “I’m coming, Elizabeth!” fake-cardiac-arrest routine Redd immortalized on Sanford and Son during the ‘70s.
