Michael Jackson’s “Shamon” Finally Explained
Thursday, July 16th, 2009It was a mystery that baffled white people for decades: What was Michael Jackson saying when he exclaimed “Shamon!” while singing some of his greatest hits?
We can now classify that mystery as “solved” after Justin the Mouthinator took the groundbreaking approach of Googling the word and reporting his results on this week’s Radio Happy Hour.
According to our portly former weatherman, “Shamon” is indeed spelled S-H-A-M-O-N and is slang for “come on.”
Wikipedia agrees partially with the Mouthinator describing the word as “a distinctive deliberate mispronunciation of ‘come on’,” though they assert its spelled “cha’mone” or “shamone”.
Several searches for lyrics to the King of Pop’s song Bad and Urban Dictionary all seem to corroborate the “come on” definition though some sources credit MJ of originating the unique pronunciation while other sources merely say he popularized the term.
Incidentally, though not his intention, “Shamone” is also an Arabic girl’s name meaning “beauty” or a boy’s name in Sanskrit meaning “mystical one.” This of course opens up a whole new mystery: What the hell is Sanskrit?!?
