The brand new Radio Happy Hour theme song

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

The long awaited new theme song for the Radio Happy Hour was unveiled on this week’s show.

When lead singer of edibleRed Collette McLafferty joined the show as a co-host, Vinny Bond suggested she record a new theme song for the show.  Dr. Blogstein thought that was a great idea and a perfect way to welcome in the new era of the Radio Happy Hour with Collette and The Burl, the other “newish kid on the block.”

The original Dr. Blogstein theme song was recorded by a Beatles tribute band Mostly Moptop. It had been in use since July 17, 2007.

The new theme song, recorded by Collette McLafferty, lead singer of edibleRed and featuring rapper Hassahn Phenomenon has a more up to date feel and more closely captures the vibe on the #1 most downloaded comedy.  The song was producer by Loor Ambient.

BEHIND THE MUSIC
The story behind the new Radio Happy Hour theme song, as told by Collette McLafferty:

The new Dr. Blogstein theme song started as a email conversation between me and Hassahn Phenomenon… I initially wrote a hook and composed a standard rock and roll theme song from my Garageband… it was super rough! Hasahn wrote a rap over it and emailed back to me about 6 weeks later… I also combed through a bunch of mp3’s from the Dr. Blogstein show so I could pick out some key samples of Doc’s voice ( I especially wanted to get one of him yelling at Vinny, since that is a staple of the show:)   As I was going through the episodes, I stumbled upon The Mouthinator.  I wasn’t initially planning to use him, but Mouthinator is to Dr. Blogstein what Cartman is to Southpark..Rolling Stone once said that Cartman’s voice is worth the price of basic cable.   Mouthinator’s voice is worth the price of high speed internet!

During that time, I started working with a kick ass electronic producer by the name of Loor Ambient… I liked the track I came up with, but since it consisted of Garageband samples that anyone could use, I thought it would be cool to get him on the track so he could spice it up with something original. Loor took it in a totally new direction and gave it more of a urban, futuristic feel. We produced it together, but he came up with the overall sound.

Interesting side note… just as we were about to bounce the track…we noticed that Hassahn said “6′oclock is the hour”… with specifying the time zone! So we had to lose that and I changed it to “9 PM eastern is the Hour”…. I’m glad we caught that!

Favorite Four: Collette’s Choice

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

We continue our look at the Radio Happy Hour hosts’ favorite episodes of 2009.  We’ve already see what The Burl and Vinny Bond chose as their favorites, now let’s hear from the newest member of our team. . .

Collette McLafferty, lead singer of edibleRed, hosted her first Radio Happy Hour as an official member of the show on November 24.  Not surprisingly, its that very episode that she has pegged as her favorite for 2009.  Reason being? Collette says:

Coolio singing happy birthday!!!!”

In addition to that guest and moment that also makes part 2 of the Best of Blogstein 2009 (premiering on Tuesday), the episode also included R&B singer Dasha and a round of Pop Culture IQ with Shawn Amos.

Collette McLafferty, lead vocalist of edibleRed, can now add co-host of the #1 Most Downloaded Comedy on BlogTalkRadio to her entertainment resume.

This week on the Radio Happy Hour, host Dr. Blogstein dropped to one knee and offered the singer of Hey Ya and Sugar and Spring the co-host position that was abruptly vacated by Dangerous Lee on September 1st.

“I’ve enjoyed every week that you’ve co-hosted with us,” Blogstein began his job offering proposal, “I feel that you have the right attitude, the right energy to be our permanent co-host.”

collette-hot-redThen, after a dig at Collette for not owning a television, Blogstein continued, “Would you be the new co-host of the Radio Happy Hour?”

Collete, clearly confused that they were simulating a marriage proposal and not simulating a wedding, responded by saying, “I do,” thus becoming the third co-host in the show’s nearly three year history.

Collette then took to her facebook, posting “Whoo hoo! It’s official. I will now be the new co-host of the Dr. Blogstein Show every Tuesday at 9PM Eastern!!!”

Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour debuted on February 13, 2007 with a co-host simply named Jane.  She left later that year when her one hour a week radio show got in the way with her  New York City socialite lifestyle.  She was replaced by Dangerous Lee  who enjoyed a successful two year run on the program before resigning following an on air fight with Dr. Blogstein over the use of household appliances during the show.

Collette McLafferty first appeared as a guest on the Radio Happy Hour on January 8, 2008. Since then, she’s returned on several occasions, even calling in once while out on a blind date.   She filled in for Dangerous Lee for the month immediately after her departure.

The “proposal” begins at the 1:04:51 mark

This week on Dr. Blogstein’s
Radio Happy Hour
:

Thom Bierdz may be best known as Phillip Chancellor III on The Young and the Restless, the openly gay character that this openly gay actor returned to play this past May after being off the program for two decades.  But what many of his adoring fans don’t know about him is that his life has all the makings of a soap opera plot.

It had only been a few weeks after he had left his role on the Y&R when his entire world was turned upside down.  His paranoid schizophrenic youngest  brother, Troy, had beaten their mother to death with a baseball bat.

thom beirdzbookTroy is currently serving a life sentence in a Wisconsin prison.  Mrs. Bierdz had  taken Troy to at least 40 psychiatrists between the time he was 15 and started to act out, and 19, when he killed her.

Thom’s second family tragedy took place in May 2002. This time his other  brother, Craig, committed suicide while in the grips of paranoid depression.  His brother left behind a wife and two young children.

In addition to his acting, Thom has penned his memoirs entitled “Forgiving Troy: A True Story of Murder, Mental Illness and Recovery” and is an artist who’s work been touted by IN Magazine as “the next Warhol” for his prolific and stylistic painting.
