Alec Baldwin: Father of the Year
Sunday, April 29th, 2007
Granted, Alec Baldwin could have chosen better words than “rude, little pig” in the now famous voice mail he left for his daughter, but at least he didn’t call her a “nappy headed ho.” And at least he was yelling at her because he was so desperate to be a part of her life.
Wouldn’t it have been much worse if he was releaved that she didn’t pick up the phone when he called? Wouldn’t it have been much, much worse if little Ireland was waiting by her phone and daddy never called?
How often do we hear stories of fathers abandoning their families or even their pregnant wives? How often do we hear tales of men who consider sending monthly checks in the mail fulfilling their parental responsibility? How often do fathers want nothing to do with their offspring? How often can I ask “how often?” as the repetition is beginning to annoy me as well.
Why are we vilifying this man? He should be celebrated! Deadbeat dads and family abandoning men all around the world are hearing Baldwin’s desperate plea to be a part of his daughter’s life. They’re seeing a man who takes his role as dad so seriously that he will fight to be able to perform that responsibility. They see a man who cares! They could learn something from Baldwin.
