Brad Pitt is Mitch Rapp. . .If He Wants It

Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour owes a big thank you to the slow moving nature of Hollywood for introducing new listeners to our show.  For years and years countless internet surfers have discovered this site and thus the radio show by searching for updates on “Mitch Rapp Movies” or “Vince Flynn Movies” (or some variation there of.)

The longer it takes the brains in La-La Land to figure out that this is a franchise that their public wants to see in theaters right away, the more visitors this search will continue to send to this site.  As eager as we are to see progress made on this film, it’ll be pretty sad to see this pipeline of potential new listeners shut down!

To refresh everyone’s memory, Vince Flynn is a frequent guest of the Radio Happy Hour and author of the New York Times #1 Bestselling series of thrillers featuring counter terrorism operative Mitch RappMitch Rapp was Jack Bauer before there ever was a Jack Bauer.

Since it was announced right here in February of 2008 that Lorenzo di Bonaventura (”Transformers”) and Nick Wechsler (“We Own The Night”) would be producing the Mitch Rapp films for CBS Films who optioned the rights for of the character with the intention of creating a action-thriller movie franchise, not much has been heard regarding the progress.

Now, Vince Flynn is about to release this statement in an email to his fans:

A lot interesting stuff is happening on the movie front.  Jonathan Lemkin who wrote the screenplay for has written a kick-ass script and is in rewrites.  Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler have been talking to directors and are closing in on actor to play Mitch.  There are three or four in the hopper right now.  Some of them have been discussed in the past and there is at least one new one who I am really excited about.  These things always take time and until they start shooting nothing is a done deal. The second we sign someone I will let you know.

Could Jon Hamm of Mad Men be one of those three or four potential Mitch Rapps in the hopper?  Only time will tell, or perhaps Vince will tell when he returns as a guest on the Radio Happy Hour on October 6 when his new novel Pursuit of Honor hits bookstores.

  4. Dennis P Says:

No offense, but I can’t see Brad Pitt playing the role of Mitch Rapp….I always pictured someone like Christian Hale (Batman) or Jason Patric or someone along those lines…jsut me I guess.

  5. Charlie H Says:

I’ve been pondering this since Mitch hit the scene and I’ll stick with my first choice, Mel Gibson, although Matt Damon rates high in my opinion. I’ve read All Vince Flynn’s books at least twice and I’m sure I’ll start reading the series again soon.

  6. Mike B Says:

Just me but i always thought leo dicaprio was rapp. Do somethin like he did in the departed

  7. Dale L Says:

How about the guy from Starship Troopers, Ricco. He would be about the right age, complection and hasn’t ever done a ‘feel good’ liberal part thatmakes him unbelieveble for Mitch Rapp. A Tom Cruise or Bad Pitt would make me stop buying the books…

  8. Tim Says:

How about the guy who played the role of The Punisher? The first movie.

  9. Tim Says:

Thomas Jane, the one who played Frank Castle in The Punisher would best suit Mitch Rapp..

  10. big d Says:

I think the perfect actor to play Mitch Rapp is Karl Urban. He was in Lord of the Rings and is very believable as a tough, assassin, unlike Brad Pitt who just couldn’t pull it off.

  11. Rappfan Says:

I think Eric Bana would be the best fit for the Mitch Rapp character. He has the same stature, coloring, and style. He slammed it in Black Hawk Down!!!

  12. mj cocciante Says:

Tom Selleck might be a bit old but he’d be better than Brad Pitt.. I’ve read all Flynns books but I will NOT go to a movie with Brad Pitt in it EVER!!!

  13. Dr. Blogstein Says:

Maybe 1983 Tom Selleck. He’s too old now. I agree on Brad Pitt. That would be BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD casting.

  14. Nucleonus Says:

Better to concentrate on an excellent, experienced, professional actor with depth, even if not terribly well known. He has to be believable in his study of Arabic and Farsi, and NOT overly polished… unless someone wants to make a movie about someone OTHER than Mitch Rapp!

The book and story will sell the movie. You don’t need to sell it with a shallow, glossy, A-list actor. Mitch Rapp has developed as a character and it would be bad form to show him as just one of a thousand who came before him. The best tactic for a franchise is to provide the stepping stones of a developing character as the movies unfold, and you can’t really do that with a Brad Pitt, as everyone will have preconceived notions of his development.

It would also be a good idea to target the political intrigue, at home and abroad, and NOT let this become a bond-like film, focussing on the lone-wolf super-hero formula we all are sick of seeing….

  15. GMRichmond Says:

I’ve always thought Mark Wahlberg would make an excellent Mitch Rapp. He’s fit, has the swagger, a rugged look and stone cold eyes with unquestionable clarity.

  16. Doclee Says:

Kiefer Sutherland should make an excellent Mitch Rapp. I am sure Vince Flynn will agree since the series “24″ is also his favourite show.

  17. Dave Says:

big d, I’m right with you on Karl Urban, not bad… but I see Gerard Butler as a natural Rapp. He can pull off the dark side you need, and has the name to pull off a blockbuster.

  18. Gary Koester Says:

I was told I would make the perfect Mitch Rapp by several fans of the charecter.

  19. melody Says:

    mark wahlberg for mitch rapp!!!

  20. melody Says:

    mark wahlberg for mitch rapp!!!!!!

  21. jake Says:

Christopher Plummer could play Thomas Stansfield.

  22. Sam E Says:

Just started the tenth book in the series. From day one I’ve always envisioned Paul Johansson from “one tree hill” as Mitch Rapp. and per his resume, he’s highly athletic and SCUBA certified. check out images on google and you’ll see he would fit the role. Much Much more so than Brad Pitt. And I’m not knocking Brad Pitt, but After reading all of the books, I just don’t see Pitt as Rapp. Johansson should definately be Mitch Rapp!!

  23. Chuck Says:

    Nucleonus said it best:

“Better to concentrate on an excellent, experienced, professional actor with depth, even if not terribly well known. He has to be believable in his study of Arabic and Farsi, and NOT overly polished… unless someone wants to make a movie about someone OTHER than Mitch Rapp! ”

Definitely a NO to Brad Pitt or Leo…Ugh!!

Hollywood will likely pic some cutey pie actor and make the villians evil capitalists run amok…possibly the executives of Halliburton?? No way this will be about Islamist terrorists.

  24. TheGame316 Says:

Ive onle just dicovered this series, and reading 6 of the novels in the last month am hooked…. Only 2 people would fit the bill in my eyes, Mark Wahlberg or Eric Bana. Being an aussie myself i would like to see Eric get it though

  25. eric Says:

josh hartnett might be an interesting fit to play mitch rapp. i also love the idea of christopher plummer playing thomas stansfield

  26. Roy Says:

Mark Wahlberg would be a GREAT Mitch Rapp

  27. John Says:

Wahlberg is way too short of stature for the role. Damon is pidgeonholed in the Bourne role, so he’s out. Colin Farrell looks like the Rapp that Flynn describes, but it would be hard to cover up all his hood rat tattoos. Pitt is just WRONG for the part. DiCaprio would be fine if this was a romance movie for the Lifetime channel, but it’s not. I agree with those pushing for Karl Urban or Eric Bana. Either actor could be as bad-ass as Rapp. Clint eastwood HAS to play Stansfield. No one else should even be considered.

  28. George Says:

Please no Brad Pitt, no Leo, no Will Smith no Fana, no to all of these clowns. This better not be a Liberal Directors plan (which it seems is not completely going to happen because they will ruin the whole show).

  29. EDWARD SNOW Says:

I THINK THE DUDE WHO PLAYED IN “MAN ON FIRE”; I FORGET HIS NAME BUT HE’S A BLACK ACTOR WHO WOULD COME ACROSS VERY POWERFULLY.

I KNOW HE WON’T GET PICKED ‘COS HE IS A BLACK GUY BUT IF VINCE DIDN’T MIND I THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT HIT!

    ED SNOW

  30. Dr. Blogstein Says:

    Denzel Washington?

  31. Alex Says:

    Good call on Paul Johansson.

  32. Jameson Says:

Mark Wahlberg would fit the part to a “T”.

  33. mitchwanna Says:

I think Gerard Butler fits the bill with the athletic build the olive complexion and I could see him with a really dark tan blending in with the arabian cover which is Mitch’s specialty. Also, he is young and could play the role over the course of time as he matures as well it would be a good match. If B. Pitt or L. DiCap gets that role, I will abandon Flynn

  34. Butch Says:

I’ve read all of Vince Flynns books. They are excellent. Since Vince Flynn is a good friend of Rush Limbaughs, why would he want to have one of those radical hollywood liberals play Mitch Rapp. Mitch Rapp should be a new face. Someone who is not tarnished by political fall out. Someonw new on the scene. Vince, please don’t ruin the Mitch Rapp character by using one of those hollywood morons, especially brad pitt or matt damon.

  35. Kathy Ransom Says:

I agree – Brad Pitt or a number of the suggestions don’t fit the image I have of Mitch Rapp – I think Gerard Butler could fit the look and has proven he could be quite versatile – e.g. 300.

  36. Dave Says:

Everyone who reads Vince’s books creates his/her own movies. I think a Hollywood version is a big mistake. It will be a disservice to Vince.

  37. Jeannie Price Says:

I have read all of Vince Flynn’s book and the one thing I like about Mitch Rapp is his honorable character and love of his country. Brad Pitt is not an honorable person and does not deserve to play this character. Please pick someone who will make us all want to be more patriotic and behave in a way deserving of our country.

  38. Johnny Says:

What about Micheal C. Hall, Dexter? I believe he could be the perfect Mitch Rapp. I think bringing in a large movie star of someones calibur like Damons or Pitts, could bring audiences to believe they are just trying to leech of past films, otherwise it will steal Flynns creativity

  40. yavetta white Says:

I totally agree with Jeannie Price and Butch as well as George. Denzel is an honorable American, but I really don’t see him as Mitch. Gerard Butler would fit.

  41. Frank Says:

    Can we please drop Wahlberg/Pitt/Leo?
Bana/Butler/Urban would all do a great job.
But I agree with some of you guys that unless Flynn keeps this project close to him, Hollywood will definitely screw it up.

  42. mitchwanna Says:

Agreed if Vince doesn’t keep it close the chest he will lose the rawness of the character. I think he said it best that the resistance has been liberal hollywood exposing the graphic nature of his coersion to a mass audience, which is why I love the character and books

  43. Mel Says:

Orlando Bloom or Channing Tatum would also be good, they have the eyes and the body. I think Wahlberg would make a good Scott Coleman because he is older than Rapp

  44. ROSS MURPHY Says:

MATTHEW MCAUNAHY (SIC) FOR MITCH RAPP. JOHN VOIGHT FOR DIRECTOR STANSFIELD.

  45. R Says:

Sorry about the spelling. Matthew McConaughey is our vote for Mitch Rapp. Staying with John Voight for Director Stansfield. How about Jodi Foster for Director Irene Kennedy? She’s tough and mature enough.

  46. R.S. Says:

I think Colin Farell would be a perfect fit for Rapp because he has that rough edge to him that Rapp has, and he matches his actual description very well. And I believe Scott Coleman would be perfect as Mark Wahlberg.

  47. Flynn Fan Says:

    Eric Bana.

  48. ROSS Says:

One has to wonder if Hollywood has the guts to do this right. NOT.
We can see Holllywood as casting a “generic terrorist” probably from some “generic” non existant Country.
Hollywood will Never mention Islamic Radicals as the enemy of the West and the USA. They will probably be terrorists from Antartica.

  49. opstime Says:

Im sorry but any of you who think mark wahlberg, matthew mcconaughey, or orlando bloom could play mitch rapp you have obviously not read the books very well. I guess if the theme was Mitch Rapp goes to the hobbit without a shirt and terrorizes frodo and dumbledorff. Colin Farrel was a better mention for rapp but Butler would be perfect. Paul johannson for Coleman who(in the book is a 6ft plus blonde.

  50. bob Says:

Jason Patric is the IS Rapp. A great actor with strength, mystery, and toughness. He hasnt sold out and rarely works , so he could launch the franchise properly. He could kick any of those other actors asses. Butler is a HORRIBLE actor who can barely speak.

  51. manulo Says:

wahlberg is a total joke as an actor. A one trick pony whose lucky day was up years ago.
    Patric is a fantastic idea.

  52. KEVIN Says:

I THINK HUGH JACKMAN OR MARC WALBERG WOULD BE A AWESOME RAPP, JACKMAN (ALREADY HAS THE BLACK HAIR) (MY WIFE LOVES HIM TOO) CAN DO THE AMERICAN VOICE (NO ACCENT) AND WALBERG WAS GREAT IN SHOOTER (VERY BELIEVABLE). EITHER WOULD BE GREAT (DEFINITELY NOT PITT, CLOONEY, OR PATRIC) YOU NEED A GUY WHO CAN BE BELIEVABLE WHILE BEING EXTREMELY VIOLENT (NO REMORSE) ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

  53. Pittsburgh'sFLO Says:

ME…..nobody knows me….but….if you did…..me…..if not me…the best image of mitch rapp is the picture on the back cover of the novels themselves, Vince Flynn. If your reading these novels and cannot pick up on that type of imagery, then you need to expand your mind a but more while you read and let the words captivate you. Thanks for your time.

  54. Frank Says:

ROSS, & opstime… hilarious. well said.

  55. Nick Says:

There MUST be some NEW actors in Bollywood looking for a break. Please

  56. avid Says:

I’d go with KEVIN’s idea of Hugh Jackman. I can picture that wolverine type of physique and rage..

  57. Eduardo Pitchon Says:

You guys are all shallow idiots. I am a psychoanalyst and Mitch is clearly a latent homosexual. I propose that very sensitive semi-gay, British actor, Hugh Grant for the role.

  58. ROSS Says:

Eduardo the “Psychoanalyst” Please find another site for latent homosexuals and check yourself in asap. You are on the wrong page. Perhaps you should be on the “Rapp Out” list? However if you are serious then we take this as good satire.

  59. Dr. Blogstein Says:

I don’t think we need to worry about Eduardo anymore, Ross. Just got word that Mitch has “taken care of the Pitchon situation”

  60. G. Snurge Says:

This Pitchon chap is broadly right. Mitch though is NOT a LATENT homosexual, as a therapy counsellor myself and member of the British Women for Peace campaign group, it is perfectly obvious that Mitch Rapp is a BLATANT homosexual, constantly seeking out opportunities for “male bonding” and “playing with penis substitutes (sorry guns)”. How is it that you Mitch Rapp admirers are in such a horrendous state of denial?

  61. Mike Owen Says:

Sounds like Mitch still has work to do to clean up “this Pitchon problem” also who on earth is this clown from the “Women for Peace” campaign? Seems like our site is being invaded by a bunch of limp-wristed, communistic euro-faggots. Go kill Mitch!!

  62. richard rey Says:

i say someone with the right age and look but someone who hasn’t played this kind of role before. no, pitt, cruise, damon, or gibson. mark walhberg could be the one.

  63. ROSS Says:

Ms. G Snurge might do well if her “British Women for Peace” group started restoring the rights of the British Citizens to Be Armed again so that they may enjoy their God given right to self defense and protection. The Brits and the Aussies have made a mess of that! Sorry to digress….this should not be a forum for Human Rights, 2nd Amendment or the NRA. It’s about
VINCE FLYNN and his creation of MITCH RAPP!

  64. Johnny Allotey Says:

Mitch is the best. How about Russell Crowe in the film role? BTW, I’ve seen this Eduardo the homo-analyst on other sites claiming that any seriously masculine character must be a homo. I hope this butt bandit comes round our way so we can give his arse a good kicking

  65. James Says:

Seriously everyone! The only Hollywood personality that can pull this character of Mitch Rapp off without a hitch is Gerard Butler. This person needs to have a ruggedly handsome look…check! This person must have the dark olive complected skin and the ability to pass for Middle Eastern…check (Have you seen 300?) The dude needs to have ferocity in his being…check! Being a huge fan of these books, I was naturally curious about a movie and wondered to myself who could play this role, who could emobdy the essence of who Mitch Rapp is and the only Hollywood actor, after looking at ‘em all, that can do this, the ONLY choice is Gerard Butler. Any other will find us all wanting…

  66. Bob Says:

Butler would not work…he is a pretty average actor. Wahlberg/Pitt/Crowe/Farrelletc. are all lazy choices. So far the best I’ve seen are Jason Patrick, Jon Hamm and in my nomination, Daniel Day Lewis, yup, I said it.

  67. Neal Says:

    What about Guy Pearce?

  68. rollergirl Says:

Matthew McConaughey is the perfect Mitch Rapp. Physically toned, but loving. Smart and just a bit of a wise-as%. Can’t you just see him as Mitch Rapp?

  69. Chris Says:

Kevin Durand………………………. would make the BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Mitch Rapp.
