If it weren’t free and if we didn’t have three Star Trek guests coming on the Radio Happy Hour in the next three weeks, I probably would never have seen this movie.
I realize how awful that would sound to any Trekkie who may be reading this–to them I was a gay guy at a strip club or an American with tickets to The World Cup. But let me tell you, as a relative Star Trek newbie, I thought the movie was amazing!
Set up as a prequel to the original series, Star Trek chronicles James T. Kirk’s rise from a hotheaded, bar brawling, green woman screwing, Midwestern punk to heroic captain of the USS Enterprise. We also see the back story beginnings of other Starfleet members including Spock.
I’m sure some inside Trekkie jokes or clever foreshadowing was lost on me but it didn’t impact my enjoyment of the movie. J.J. Abrams, who wrote and directed the film, did a masterful job at making this a good stand-alone movie without alienating or talking down to long time fans (at least according to the long time fans I spoke to after the movie and who I witnessed walking out of the theater rather pleased with what they had just seen.)
The action and effects were great. The story was fun. And there was a smattering of comical moments.
If only George Lucas called J.J. Abrams instead of making the Star Wars prequels himself!
