Ernest Borgnine’s secret to longevity. . .

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Hats off (and that’s not all!).He may be turning 92 next month, but Ernest Borgnine is showing no signs of slowing down in the, ah, potency department.

In an unbridled interview with Radio Happy Hour host Dr. Blogstein, the Oscar-winning actor reveals why he slipped up this summer and let the secret to his youthful appearance slip on live national television.

When Steve Doocy of Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends asked Enrie in August, “You’re 91 years old.  You look fantastic… What’s the secret?” the McHale’s Navy star shot back, “I don’t dare tell you. I masturbate a lot.”

Now Ernie explains to Dr. B that he had no idea the retort would be heard ‘round the world.

“I’ve always said so many times, amongst friends, that’s what I do because it keeps me young. And everybody would fall down laughing for a while.  And that was it.  Everybody would get a good laugh.

“Well, this one fella kept it up at Fox News – ‘Oh, you gotta tell me! You gotta tell me!’ So, without remembering that I had a microphone on, I leaned over and I told him,” continues Ernie, whose autobiography, Ernie, was published in July.

“Well, you should have seen the fellas behind the camera. They fell on the floor! They couldn’t believe what I’d said.  And I looked at them and said, Why would they collapse like that? And suddenly I remembered the mic.”

Ernie also says that, despite being a nonagenarian, he has no aversion to playing a stud on the silver screen.

When Dr. B asks him, “If they were to write a good script, would you still play a love-story part?” Ernie’s replies:

“Hey, listen, if they could see me as a love story, believe me, I’d do it!”

Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Snowmen

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

20071212-riedel-gentleman-snowman.jpg

This week, Bob Eckstein, author of The History of the Snowman, joined us on the Radio Happy Hour.

Now, he provides us with a list of ten of the most fascinating, surprising and mind-blowing things that he’s certain that you never knew about Frosty and his ancestors:

Ten Things You Didnt Know About Snowmen

1. The worlds largest snowman is actually a snowwoman. Named Olympia, she was built last year in Bethel, Maine and was a record 13 stories high, made from over 13 million pounds of snow.

2. One of Americas greatest sculptors Larkin Meads, first important piece was a snowman. The world famous Snow Angel was created in Brattleboro, Vermont on New Years Eve of 1856.

3. A cartoon snowman was found in a 1380-illuminated manuscript in the Royal Library at The Hague. Alongside a solemn passage about Jesus Christ, it is, to date, the earliest drawing of a snowman.

4. In the heyday of the snowmans popularity in advertising, the snowman even hocked his own flesh and blood with Snowman brand Re-Usable Cand Ice, a popular product from the 1940s.

5. Snowmen were blamed for one of the bloodiest events in early American history when the guards of Fort Schenectady left their posts to warm up inside leaving only a pair of snowmen to greet French soldiers and Indians on the eve ofThe Massacre of 1690.

6. Snowman making was an early form of political commentary dating back to the Middle Ages. At a time before most people were literate, this early form of folk-art was a way for townspeople to express themselves when free art supplies fell from the sky.

7. The population of snowmen would outnumber humans in Japanese towns for a time during snow festivals. A world record was broken in 2003 when 12,379 snowmen were made in Sapporo, Japan, most with candles planted in their tummies.

8. Snowman-making is an aerobic exercise burning an average number of 238 calories per snowman, per hour. As a matter of fact, according to Men’s Health magazine in 2008, making a snowman is one of the most romantic winter activities there is.

9. Michelangelo made a snowman. In 1494, after a heavy snowfall in Florence, Italy, a young 19-yr old Michelangelo was commissioned to sculpt an enormous figure of snow in the courtyard of Piero deMedici, Lord of Florence.

10. A snowman is the subject of one of the earliest photographs ever shot. Mary Dillwyn, a pioneer of photography, shot a picture of a couple making a snowman as part of a photo album made for a sickly niece. The album is now worth close to $100,000.
