Eulogy for The O.C.

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Tonight airs the final episode of The O.C., a program that writers and producers put so much of themselves into the first season, they had nothing left to give after that.

Seasons 2 through whatever they’re up to (I stopped watching when the rest of America did) now fall into the same category as Rocky V, The Golden Palace and Lex Luthor’s interview with “Father Felony”: Parts of the story we pretend never happened otherwise it ruins everything thing that happened before it.

From the beginning, The O.C. had all the ingredients necessary to get me interested in a program: hot girls. But getting me drawn in was only half the battle. The first season was intelligent, quirky and heart warming. There was also a great big fight and/or disaster in every episode that usually interrupted and/or ruined the most glamorous of social events.

But that first season was far more than just a network TV drama. It was a vehicle for social change. It made Jews cool and geeks chic. It showed us that the wealthy are just as screwed up as the poor. It introduced us to Chrismukkah, the ultimate melting-pot holiday that began on The O.C. and eventually was listed in Time Magazine as one of the “buzzwords” of 2004.

But above all, The O.C. brought attention to deaf rights and the importance of closed-captioning. Never in the history of television has there been an actor like Adam Brody (Seth Cohen). The guy, for as witty and goofy as he is, has a severe mumbling problem and a knack for swallowing his punch lines. Countless times I was forced to rewind and put on my closed captioning to figure out what the hell he was saying. This taught me the perils of what it must like to be deaf and really made me appreciate their hardships.

While most of us said goodbye to The O.C. a few years ago, tonight is the official farewell. I will not be watching so if anyone does, please let me know what happened. Actually, on second thought, I don’t care.

Baldilocks

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

Slow down, Britney! We can only handle one hillbilly train wreck at a time.

Its painfully obvious that you’re jealous that world’s media outlets have sent all their white trash correspondents to The Bahamas to cover the Anna Nicole case, but I think you’ve gotten desperate.

Its clear, you’ve run out of ideas. You should have spread your stunts out a little better than you have.

At just 25-years-old, you’ve already done it all. You’ve had your celebrity relationship with Justin Timberlake, your celebrity feud with Christina Aguilera, your sexual brush with a Limp Bizkit, a lesbian kiss with Madonna, a twenty-four-hour joke marriage and then a 2 year marriage to a joke, two babies (one of which was nearly dropped), two divorces, public nudity, public vomiting, one day stay in a rehab center, and now you’re bald.

This is either a desperate cry for help or a desperate cry for coverage. Either way, there’s not much more you can do now. You’ve done it all. Sadly, just as Anna Nicole discovered, dying is the only thing left to do to ensure the spotlight will be solely on you.

A word of warning though, something I’m not sure Anna Nicole fully understood, once you die you will not be able to watch the coverage unfold, nor will you be able to pose for the paparazzi.

Author throws flag at NFL

Friday, February 16th, 2007

***This article is so old already***

***Click here for the latest info on Brad Thor!***

or click play below to listen to Dr.Blogstein’s June 24, 2008 interview with Brad Thor

Brad Thor, one of the finest thriller writers in the world today, whose books usually take on Islamic Radical Fundamentalist terrorists, is now taking on the National Football League.

Huh?

Yeah, you read that correctly. In his blog on Amazon.com, Thor cites this recent Fox News report that the NFL refused to run a U.S. Border Patrol recruitment ad in last month’s Super Bowl program because it thought certain language in the ad, specifically the terms “terrorists,” “illegal aliens” and “drug smugglers”, might offend attendees. Because of this, Thor is calling for a boycott of the NFL.

To say that I am shocked is an understatement,” Thor states in his blog post, “I never knew that terrorists, illegal aliens and drug smugglers comprised such a stalwart base of NFL customers. Heaven forbid the NFL should offend them.”

Thor believes the NFL made this decision because they are currently considering a foreign franchise in the next 10 years, with Mexico City a strong contender. He cites this quote from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

“We love Mexico. We have a great fan base there. It’s growing every day. We are very interested in going back. And we hope to be dealing with the various officials in Mexico to try to get that done for the 2008 season.”

To me, it does seem silly that the NFL would decline to take money from the government to run this ad that hoped to help reach President Bush’s goal of boosting Border Patrol’s ranks to 18,000. I mean, if the NFL really wants Mexico to have a franchise doesn’t it behoove the league to keep the potential fan base in that country? At this rate, the best way to reach the Mexican market would be to finally bring an NFL franchise back to Los Angeles!

I vow to fully support Brad Thor’s call for a boycott of the National Football League. . .at least until September.

I also vow NOT to watch the NFL Network that is still currently unavailable on my local cable system.

By the way, Brad Thor is from Chicago and is a Chicago Bears fan though that is reportedly not the cause of his bitterness towards the game of football.

Lex Luthor Update

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

I wanted to bring forward a couple of comments that were left in my previous pot. Its an exchange I had with David Amerland, a publisher from the U.K. and apparently Edmond “Lex Luthor” McGuyer’s spokesperson.

All of this revolves around an email the Edmond sent to me about comments I made about him on the Test Show of Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour when I was discussing this incident.
(There’s a lot of background information but to give it to you in a nut shell: Edmond did something that I feel was not so nice)

For the record, I have invited Edmond on a couple of occasions to call into the show to discuss this matter like rational human beings. I feel bad about how he treated me and its upsetting that it has caused me to lose a friend. Edmond, the offer still stands. Call in next week.

And now, here are the comments that I promised…I left his spacing intact.

David Amerland said…

Living up to a claim is no easy thing. “Breaking Down Barriers” is always hard to do particularly when those barriers uphold professional ethics, a certain way of professional conduct and the truth. Mystifying comment I know but..hey, let’s take things from the beginning and look at Happy Hour’s 16h minute of broadcasting where the host preens himself on his greatness at being the only one to ever interview Randall Radic. Of course he completely forgets that Radic was interviewed live before anyone else by Lex Luthor in his debut Radio Blog Spot http://www.blogtalkradio.com/hostpage.aspx?show_id=11153 on the 28th January. With convenient loss of memory is slightly at odds with his comments a few minutes later regarding an “email which upset him and behaviour which he does not like”. The email in question was sent regarding unwarranted on air comments concerning Lex Luthor and the ‘behaviour’ Dr B does not like is the exact same first live interview which he has so conveniently forgotten to mention to which he responded with the rather petulant message “you stole my guest, shame on you”. At this point I am going to forego the lecture on professionalism, ethics and even common decency so I will stick to the facts: Lex Luthor live interviewed Randal Radic first. Dr B had no exclusive agreement or rights to Randal Radic. As a professional it was always up to him to move fast. Had he taken six more years to make up his mind would he expect the rest of the Blogging or Journalistic world to guess he was first in his mythical, imaginary line and wait? Then, by virtue of his own on-air comments it appears that we also all are in danger of angering him or arousing his dislike in which case we are fair on-air target. Beyond the litigious angle here which libel lawyers are going to love there is also the one about basic human liberty and professional courtesy. Lex Luthor is a fellow Blog Spot radio host who has publicly acknowledged his esteem for Dr B on his own blog and on air. Obviously the first amendment, journalistic values of impartiality and even common courtesy towards fellow professionals are a reach too far for Dr B, or maybe this is exactly the breaking down of barriers he is aiming for on his show.

Dr. Blogstein said…

David A: Edmond is a very lucky man to have someone like you in his corner. I suppose you’re representing him now since I’ve been unable to get him to email me back or call into the shot to discuss this issue.

I stand by my disgust in his actions and I’ll tell you why. I feel that I earned the opportunity to be informed , if not asked if I minded, if he invited Radic onto his show. Here is what I have done for Edmond that leads me to that feeling:
1: I interviewed him on Dr. Blogstein after he requested I do so.

2: I gave him his nickname, for which he’s created a whole character, web site, etc.

3.I have given him free PR and marketing advice, INCLUDING writing an entire press release for him.

4: He would have never known about or been able to contact Radic if it were not for me.

5: He would not have known about Blog Talk Radio had it not been for me.

Edmond knew I was starting a show. He knew my relationship with Radic and I believe he knew what he was doing was wrong. Had he not thought he was behaving inappropriately I believe I wouldn’t have had to find out about his interview with Radic through a web site press release service.

The offer still stands for Edmond to defend himself on my show. I’m losing faith that this will happen now that he has you as his mouthpiece.

Joe Franscella, Managing Editor of The Ripon Record will share exclusive and breaking news concerningFather Felony Randall Radic before it hits the morning paper.

"We’re breaking barriers"

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

Those were just some the words CEO Alan Levy used to describe Blog Talk Radio now that Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour is on the schedule.

He said a whole lot more when he made a surprise call in to our exclusive practice show in preparation for our debut on Tuesday at 9PM ET. The entire audio of the “Test Show” can be heard by pressing play here:

As you will hear, Levy also stated that “we’re in the midst of a revolution” and that it’s “very possible” that Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour will eventually become Blog Talk Radio’s “#1 show.”

Originally, this practice show, which was used to learn the equipment and give my co-host Jane and me a show under our belts before our real debut on Tuesday, was going to be immediately destroyed. But after Levy described the show by saying that this show “will be a start of a blossoming empire” I decided to let the program survive.

What you will hear is the historic, almost-first episode of Dr. Blogstein’s Radio Happy Hour, which, no doubt will one day be enshrined in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. Hear Jane and I discuss Anna Nicole Smith, Barack Obama, and cherry-blossom air fresheners. You’ll hear me screw up sound effects. Plus, you’ll also hear me piss off caller Tisha and then have to uncover what it was I did to her.

Please enjoy this historic broadcast and come back again on Tuesday Night for our debut show!

Constructive criticism welcome.

Ditz of Our Lives

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Don’t worry—I’m not going to make light of Anna Nicole Smith’s death because eventually we’ll find out through some twist that it was her twin sister who died and not Anna Nicole. I mean, that’s how it always happens in soap operas and let’s face it, Anna Nicole’s life is being scripted by some of the most talented soap writers in the world—how else can you explain her life story?

Her character starts out as a waitress at a dump called Jim’s Krispy Fried Chicken where, at 18 years old, she meets and marries a 16-year-old fry cook (what a catch!) She then gives birth to a boy, Daniel.

Two years later, she divorces the fry cook and becomes a topless dancer when one night she meets an 89-year-old oil tycoon. Sparks immediately started to fly. Was it true love? Was it the friction caused by giving a lap dance to man in a wheel chair? In any event, they marry and the old coot encourages Anna Nicole to pursue a career in modeling by bankrolling her pursuit of fame.

Anna Nicole then gets discovered by Playboy and becomes Playmate of the Year. Then she’s discovered by Guess jeans and becomes their lead model. Then, like most men in their 90’s do, he croaks thus beginning a new story arc for our heroine—the fight for the old man’s money!

Anna wins the money but the old guy’s son appeals all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court (must be sweeps.) In the meantime, the old guy’s son dies too.

Now, it gets good. Anna is pregnant, but who’s the daddy? She gives birth to a girl in the Bahamas with her creepy lawyer/lover in the room and her son, Daniel, near by. Three days later, Daniel mysteriously dies in the same hospital room that his baby half sister was born in. Was it an overdose? Was it murder? Did he find out that the creepy lawyer/lover was not the baby’s father?

A sleazy photographer who dated Anna Nicole claimed that the baby was his. The creepy lawyer/lover claimed that the baby was his. Anna Nicole refused to submit the baby for DNA testing. Perhaps she was afraid it wasn’t either of there’s or perhaps she was holding out for an invitation from Maury Povich to appear on his show.

Either way, we may never know, because yesterday, Anna Nicole was discovered dead in a hotel room in Florida. Was it an overdose? Was it murder? Was it suicide? Was it really Anna’s long lost twin sister? Stay tuned. . .
